For the Birds

She wondered what life would be like if they were still together, so she looked them up, one by one.

She found men who were now bird watchers, high-end sneaker collectors, potheads. She saw men who littered their social media with selfies. She read an article that men who posted selfies were more likely to exhibit signs of narcissism and psychopathy, and these informal studies backed the research.

She perused each profile and tried to remember their relationships. Many of the men hadn't demonstrated much personality, or if they had, she couldn't remember it. What did it mean that all she could think was "He watched Star Trek," or "He watched porn"?

The bird watcher initially intrigued her; it seemed like a hobby that required dedication and intelligence. But he did always like to sit on his ass, she reasoned with herself, imagining herself back in the apartment they shared; cooking and cleaning on her own.

She wondered what she should be like not that they weren't together, when she could be anything she wanted. She looked out of the kitchen window and saw a cardinal perched on the fence. She blew it a kiss for luck and turned away.
