Clearly, her new boss had liked whoever Ruby had been in the interview. It was the only callback she got from half a dozen interviews. She had been a hip reporter, a librarian with an advanced degree, a child-at-heart who was capable of running a summer camp, and an administrative assistant with a pleasant phone voice.

Working the counter of a dry cleaner didn't pay much above minimum wage, but the old woman who owned the business seemed somewhat desperate for help. It probably didn't matter who Ruby showed up as, but she liked to be consistent. Dependable.
