The old woman was already at the counter, but she didn't look up. Ruby stood at the plate glass storefront and tried to envision what her life would be like once she entered. Who she would become eight hours a day. 

That workplace persona inevitably seeped into Ruby's real life as well. She worked so hard at her job that it took more than just coming home and changing clothes to go back to who she was at her core, whoever that was. If she made friends with coworkers and started having dinner and drinks with them, she became the new person even more.

But Ruby didn't mind. After all, wasn't that the ultimate purpose in life? Become someone.
