I’m told that trying to imitate my favorite writers’ styles is good - it means I’m reading widely, reading critically, applying what I absorb.
What I keep to myself is that I write like them because I want to be them. I want to be a confident, alcoholic man.
I want to watch them slave with their pens over the paper, their fingers over the typewriter keys. I want to peer over their shoulders. I want to see their handwriting and touch the words as they write them.
