Zany

Isla had always been drawn to the strange, so the tucked-away museum was something she knew she couldn’t miss on her trip. The Curiosities of Forgotten Times, the sign read. Inside, the dim space buzzed with electric energy. Shelves brimmed with odd relics, and something in the air felt alive.

Isla looked around, trying to take in everything. Then she noticed the paintings began to stir. Figures shifted, scenes rippled, and one chaotic swirl of color danced off its canvas.

“What?!” she gasped.

A voice behind her warned, “I wouldn’t stand too close.”

She turned to find a tall man in a patchwork suit of newspaper clippings.

“I’m Gregory. The curator. The exhibits come alive when they feel the presence of someone who understands them,” he explained as statues stretched and paintings came to life around them. “They run on creativity, chaos, and connection. They’re more than art… they’re alive. And they need someone like you.”

“Me?” Isla asked, wide-eyed.

“You see them for what they truly are. They need a guide. A keeper.”

He offered her a golden curator badge.

She took it with a slight smile. “I think I can handle a little chaos.”

Gregory winked. “Welcome to the truly zany.”

The museum erupted into life. Isla talked to paintings, pranced around on massive horse sculptures, and watched dinosaur bones roar to life. She could feel it in her bones: she belonged here. And the museum knew it too.

I've loved the idea of living in a museum since I read "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" over and over again as a kid. I also really love a lot of strange short stories I've read about odd museums, like “The Museum of Whatnot” by Kevin Wilson from Tunneling to the Center of the Earth. I feel like there's so much potential for mystery in museum settings...

  1. That would be a different experience! I remember a painting in the Detroit Institute of Art of a shark, a small boat and I think a man in the water. That would be one I would not like to see alive!
